Do you keep a journal or diary? I don’t. But I have friends who do, though, and at times (perhaps more times than I care to admit) I’m envious of their discipline. In my opinion (as a non-chronicler of my daily thoughts and activities), having the ability to refer back to a time-period or specific event, with the clarity and insight that these journals provide, is topped in detail only by repeating the actual “act” itself.
So what does this have to do with Re-Shuffle – The Next Big Deal, you ask?
Well as an example, let’s take a look at Apple’s iTunes/Genius.
It’s your very own personal and intimate music and video documentarist. The genius behind Genius is that it automatically collects and archives your every sampling and purchase. Then, at your request (it can’t be too Orwellian), and based on your ongoing “relationship” with Genius, you’ll be provided with alternative selections so reflective of your own tastes that it may suggest, somewhat eerily, that someone has been “stalking” your every move.
Now apply this scenario to your everyday life, and the number of decisions you make in the course of a single day. Add to that the fact that your “smartphone” is now capable of knowing your exact location, and…well, you get the idea.
Are you in the “market” for a new pair of shoes? How about lunch? You’re a vegetarian, you say? No problem, that was already a “given.” In fact, it’s currently 12:37 p.m. and your favorite restaurant is only at 67% capacity. If you walk one block and catch the 12:50 shuttle (#231), you’ll be there in 16 minutes. Just follow the “flashing” blue ball. Oh yeah, coincidentally, your friend Susan who happens to be in the area has been notified of your location and will be joining you for dessert.
How about that drive to work? In fact, how about everyone’s work commute? Based on your last 300 drive times, the current and average traffic volume en route, and your average start and return times, are you open for some suggestions that will make your commute more time efficient? Need to pick up your dry-cleaning before or after? Another “given” - which is also the reason your ‘PDA” is reminding you to go and pick it up. Again, just follow the “flashing” blue ball.
Now that we have ALL wrestled control of the media out of the hands of the few, what’s our next big collective challenge? How about who “owns” the information? The good news is that you do…sort of.
From a marketing perspective (what would you expect from a marketing guy?), it will continue to be about awareness, relevant search, and relevant find. You know the drill: hunt and gather, more of the same…only different.
